Mapping Mashups
I am starting a new blog topic and it is on "Mapping Mashups." I personally have never heard of Mapping Mashups before, but after doing some research on it, it is basically a map (like google earth) with data placed on top of it. An example I saw in an article is a map of the United States and alumni from Syracuse University for instance, could see where their fellow classmates have ended up. Or colleges could see how their recruitment is holding up across various parts of the Country or World. I am curious if any of you have heard of Mapping Mashups before and what the context was.

Angela,
ReplyDeleteMe too. I never heard about it before but when I looked at the name, I think it might be program about mapping service. After I search for information, It is a mapping services allow users to navigate most of the globe through a Web interface, viewing varying levels of resolution through maps, satellite imagery, or a combination.
Angela,
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this either, but this is a very interesting concept. However, even google earth scares me with how you can see everything about your house on the oustide and the area you live in. I feel like maps mashup is crazier how it "tracks" where people have ended up if you want. I don't know how I feel about this concept yet.
Leah,
ReplyDeleteI agree I the "tracking" of where people end up seems a little unsafe in my opinion, but I am going to look and see if I can find something on the safety of this application.
Hi Angela,
ReplyDeleteI've never heard about mapping mashups before. But it seems pretty useful. We are able to make a net map using it. It is a great tool helping us getting in touch with people around the world. As well, for scientific studies, like protecting wild animals, it will help the scientists to track the certain species of animal in order to protect them.
Hi Anglea,
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of mapping mashups either but it seems pretty cool. I agree the safety thing seems a little concerning but at the same time im not sure how accurate or detailed the location really is. It still seems interesting and am looking forward to hearing more about it. Can you search for anything you want on it or does it have categories to choose from.
Students will like this because it is interactive applying their own knowledge to build a map project, students enjoy connection with their home in the world.

I agree with Lindsay and Leah about safety when you think of the problems in Facebook

Angela,
ReplyDeleteJust like a lot of us I have never heard of mapping mushups. They seem like they could have a variety of uses like the one you have stated. I see them as an alternative way of organizing information that is more visually stimulating. If you think about reading a list of where people are located compared to looking at a map of it; most would prefer the map.
haha Mashups not mushup!
ReplyDeleteAngela, I had never heard of mapping mashups before, either. I'm looking forward to reading your blog for more information about them!
